[Newsletter] What the h#@* is gentle parenting anyway?

The Weekly Dispatch

Topics from this week

Hi Reader,

Parenting trends come and go, and for us parent's today, the term that seems to be everywhere is "gentle."

And I'll admit, it got me too. I loved the idea of gentle parenting, but in practice, it's easier said than done.

Over the past 6ish years, I've read books, listened to podcasts, bought courses, and hired coaches to help me learn to parent in a way that felt authentic to me and different than I was raised.

And that has brought me to a place where I feel that I can be, the vast majority of the time, "gentle."

This week's episode of Weaning It further dives into this subject, but in the context of toddler nursing.

I provide you with an actual definition of gentle parenting from the woman who coined the term, concrete strategies to use with your breastfeeding toddler to help manage meltdowns and increase connection, and what to do when your child cries when you say "no" to the boob.

You can listen here now.

One of the most important things I've taken away from the gentle parenting philosophy is to be kind and gentle to ourselves as well, especially when we act in a way we regret with our kids.

Gentle parenting isn't about perfection; it's about emotional regulation... and how better to teach our kids that we still love them even when they have big feelings than to show them we love ourselves in our hardest moments too?

The Weekly Dispatch Topics from this week Hi Reader, Over the years of helping extended nursing moms, I've found themes and patterns that helped distinguish the needs of a client and how close they actually are to that final nursing session. These patterns led me to create my Extended Breastfeeding Quiz as a free resource to help guide moms struggling to figure out when and how to wean. The 5 categories are not linear, although time nursing is a factor. Similar to the emotional cycle of the...

The Weekly Dispatch Topics from this week Hey Reader, I hope this email finds you sipping on your fall beverage of choice, listening to your favorite autumn playlist, and enjoying this time before cold season really sets in. The past couple weeks, I noticed a trend in my IG feed - a lot of gentle parenting bashing. First, was this article from Motherly. Then @thedailytay crept into my feed with back to back reels humorously critiquing our generation's most popular parenting trend. And one got...

The Weekly Dispatch Topics from this week Hi Reader, This weekend we took the train up the CA coast to Santa Barbara to visit family. They live in a very small town called Los Olivos, which basically has a two block main street that is mostly wine tasting restaurants. Scott's aunt and uncle are now in their 60s and successfully raised 3 boys while both working. So of course I was curious; how did they do it? And the answer was clear: they had a village. You see, in spite of the town being so...
